In the 20 years since the dissolution of the former Soviet Union, Kazakhstan has experienced economic setbacks and an increase in poverty during its transition to a market-based economy. As a part of that process, Kazakhstan’s small business sector—a vital source of jobs and income— has also experienced a bumpy road.
